The Kauai Waimea Canyon Island Tour (5
Hours):
The Waimea
Canyon Tour features the Waimea Canyon Lookout (3400ft!). From
this vantage point, the awesome width and breadth, jewel-tone colors and
fanciful
rock
formations of the canyon are revealed.
Traveling west
on Highway 50, known as Kaumualii Highway, you will pass the last sugar
plantation on Kauai. Across the water you will see Niihau, commonly
referred to as the “Forbidden Isle.”
The tour also
includes the following scenic attractions. Hanapepe Valley Lookout which
offers a choice view of the river valley hemmed in by red cliffs.
The Old
Russian Fort remains built by a Russian Fur Company employee in hopes of
seizing Kauai for the Czar. Captain Cook’s Landing at the mouth of
Waimea River where Captain James Cook first set foot in Hawaii January
1778. The bay was later used as a provisioning port for Pacific traders
and whalers.
The Wailua
River Tour features the Wailua River, Hawaii’s only navigable
river, and the Fern Grotto. Riverboats leave the Wailua Marina to
cruise the placid
river, accompanied by music and narration, to the Fern Grotto, a
hauntingly beautiful cave festooned with giant hanging ferns.
The tour also
stops at Opaekaa Falls Lookout. The Wailua River makes a dramatic plunge
from the high cliffs to create Opaekaa Falls, a name meaning “rolling
shrimp.” The name dates back to the time when hundreds of shrimp where
seen rolling in the turbulent waters at the base of the falls.
Situated near
the entrance to the Coco Palms Resort and coconut grove is the Holo-Holo
Ku Heiau which is said to be one of the oldest on Kauai and one of the
few in Hawaii where human sacrifices were offered to the gods. The heiau
was restored in 1933 and the sacrifical stone may still be seen.

Waimea Canyon Wailua River and Fern

riverboat ride up the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto.
This
introduction to Kauai, the Garden Island, features two of the area’s
most dramatic natural attractions: 2,857-foot deep Waimea Canyon and a
ride up the Wailua River to the famed Fern Grotto.
Your adventure
starts with a drive to a lookout point at 3,400-feet. From here, you’ll
have an unsurpassed view of the rainbow-colored canyon, with its reds
and browns from the exposed volcanic rock formations and blues and
greens from lush tropical vegetation.
At the Wailua
Marina your guide will direct you to a flat bottom motor launch for your
journey up Hawaii’s longest navigable river. This beautiful lava cavern
forms a natural amphitheater with excellent acoustics. At the grotto,
keeping with island custom, a chorus will serenade you with the
traditional Hawaiian Wedding Song.
