colors and landscape of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park unfold as
rainforest gives way to barren lava fields. Immediately after take-off, you will fly
over dense rainforest and lush valleys with streams and pools filled by
cascading waterfalls.
As you
proceed, the vast, stark plains of the lava fields begin to emerge.
Kilauea Volcano is the most active on earth and has been continuously
erupting since 1983 primarily from the Pu’u Oo Vent, constantly
percolating and sending a lava stream flowing toward the ocean. The
natives pay homage to Pele, (the Goddess of Fire), and hope to appease
her to protect their property.
Pele’s whims
have indeed destroyed villages, including Kalapana in 1990, with a lava
flow
engulfing and destroying the town. For years the lava has been flowing
to the ocean, creating about 50 acres of new land per year as it cools
when running into the sea. The steam arising is known as “Pele’s
Fountain.”
The Elements
of Creation, fire and water, are colliding in front of you. When we were
there in July, a giant portion of this new land broke off into the ocean
and formed a new shelf along the coast. The lava flow shifted and is now
being closely watched to see if Pele may be claiming new territory.
Flying over
the vent and following the lava flow is fascinating to witness and your
pilot provides interesting narrative on the volcano’s history and it’s
effect on the Big Island.
